Where and When: The game starts out just outside of Boston in the year 2013. But as time moves on the game will change its location with the 2nd Mass constantly being on the move.
The game takes place before the series and a little bit before the invasion takes place. A week. This means some canon events will obviously will not happen.
Ei: Ben may not end up kidnapped, Tom never leading the 2nd Mass, Pope never joining the 2nd Mass, etc.
How did I get here?: Your character if they are not native to this universe, will be brought voluntarily or involuntarily by assistance from the Volm. Your character will be placed just outside of the settlement; this of course will be depending on where the 2nd Mass has settled.
For native characters, the 2nd Mass is not just a militia but it is also responsible for picking up other civilians during their travels. We are willing to hand wave that your character was in the area to make transitioning them into the game easier.
What is the Pace?: This will be decided on at a later date.
What is the setting like?: Welcome to Earth, with only ten percent of the population remaining. The major cities: New York City, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, ect have been literally destroyed during the arrival of the Espheni. The city of Boston remains intact, but it is the hub of one of the Espheni platforms and thus heavily defended. There is a chance that there are many other cities that were spared by the Espheni attacks.
There are whole towns that are completely devoid of people with those who survived, who have went to hide, or some with more nefarious intentions may have dug into easily defended places. With no communication between the cities or other parts of the world, what one will encounter is a complete mystery.
Who are the Eshpeni and Volm:?
The Overlords aka Espheni
Chemlock (Harness)
Skitters
The Volm
Espheni and Volm Technology
The Resistance and Outlaws: The game will consist of two factions, one the Global Resistance that consists of the 2nd Mass and the other, The Outlaws while also resisting the occupation of the Espheni will be trying to take advantage of the lack of power.
Not all humans are good, and many are happy to find other ways to survive an apocalyptic wasteland. How or what will be up to whoever ends up running the faction.
Leadership for both factions is always subjected to change, by the character being dropped, challenged, or in some cases death.
What will I expect?: This game is a survival/horror game. Characters will face a variety of both physical and psychological challenges through the duration of the game. They will not only deal with the Espheni, but there is a chance to deal with other humans, the Volm, and there maybe other potential plots that deal with other horror tropes.
While, Fallen Stars is an AU game and Falling Skies is still an ongoing series, we will make sure to pay attention to important factors of the series. Example: Finding out how to safely remove the harnesses from the children. The arrival of the Volm, and anything else that would be important to the game over the series. We do not plan to follow the series to the letter, and we want to make our own adventure set within the Falling Skies Universe.
What part do the harnessed children play?: They play a very large part during throughout the series, and they will continue to play a large part in the game. The 2nd Mass will do everything under its control to make sure that the harnessed children are saved. This of course will not always be the case. We will allow people to opt-out of any event that may involve the death of a child. The harnessed children will eventually be deharnessed but this process is dangerous, and many children may and do die in the process.
Technology: All modern electronics have been completely fried from the EMP, so welcome to having to deal with technology going back to the 80's and from whatever else can be salvaged. There are still cars, there is still gas, even that will eventually run out thanks to the lack of refineries and the technological curve will go back to the early 20th century outside the use of modern rifles. There are plenty of things to be found, and scavenged have been left behind. There are still military bases, car lots, abandoned cars, old planes, boats, trains, old military equipment, and anything else that requires a little spark of ingenuity to get working and to slip under the radar of the Espheni.
As time moves on, things might get better or worse, it depends on what course the game takes. There is a chance a city can be inhabited, defended, and some of the luxuries we take for granted might make a come back.
Network: This means, there is no network until someone might be able how to safely setup a short-wave radio system and even that maybe faulty. So, there is no network in this game, and it will rely heavily on face-to-face interactions.
Medicine and Illness: Medicine is just as import as food, and it is required for people to have just like food and water. With living in conditions that are far from the 21st century, and more like the 19th century there is the chance of various outbreak of disease.
There are hospitals but they are anything but a sterile environment for their patients. The practice of medicine is left to all but those who survived, or those that crossed over through the rift. Even with all of their skill in modern medicine there is only so much that can be done. This does mean that your character does run the risk of disfigurement, loss of limb, and infection.
This means medical supplies need to be searched for just like food. There are numerous warehouses, hospitals, abandoned doctor's offices, and of course pharmaceutical companies where these things can be found. The Espheni are well are of this, and locations that have resources are always under guard by both mechs and skitters.
People can and will get sick due to the lack of proper hygiene, and a simple cold could prove to be devastating. (Not Finished)
Food and Housing:
*Food: Being on the move means there is no time to start a farm, this means food will need to be scavenged, hunted, and gathered by any means possible.
Food will run out! And it will go bad! There will be no magical food appearing in your tents!
People will need to organize hunting parties to raid other towns for food, gather others to go fishing or hunting. Food can also be canned and smoked to help provide some food for those long winters.
What can be found?: There are still plenty of wild game, zoos, escaped farm animals, and with only ten percent of the population still alive there are plenty of homes, markets, and food distribution centers.
* Housing: Home is simply where the Second Mass makes it, it could be in a school, prison, military base, motels, abandoned hospitals, stadiums, and you can name it. Most of the time will be spent on the road, so your character will be living out of a tent or their mode of transportation.
The game will be moving from state to state, and there is even a chance that it will move on to other parts of the world in later points of the game.
Moving will be the result of many things from missions, attacks from the Espheni, or people drawing attention to most importantly consequences from some bad actions that would draw the Espheni's attention to the location of the Second Mass. And that's not to mention that staying in one place is dangerous.
Can my character die?: Yes. While we do not allow for perma-death except for certain occasions, coming back to life will always be with potential consequence.
Both the Espheni and Volm are capable of reviving the mortally or gravely injured, but due to the lack of Volm involvement on the surface your character will find themselves in the hands of the Espheni.
While captured, your character may end up being tortured for information, implanted with an eye worm, or if the character is a child there is the chance that they will be fitted with a harness. And, due to the risky nature of removing the harness there is a slight chance that the character can risk perma-death or will suffer the after affects of having their harness removed.
Skittered: If you are removed from your character and they are a child, they will end up as one of many Skitters or just one of many other harnessed children. The character of course will be reopened for a new applicant.
Moles: The Espheni are very keen on causing panic in the ranks of the Second Mass. And, captured characters are an excellent source of potential saboteurs, spies, and to disrupt the resistance by any means possible.
